Exchanged phone messages yesterday with EINSTEIN’S DREAMS author Alan Lightman. I called him looking for a published stage adaptation of his novel.Though “twenty to thirty” adaptations have occurred since the book’s release, none have been published. (Lightman noted a recent adaptation by Boston playwright Wes Savick as “quite good.”)
Here’s my idea:
Imagine: you arrive at a non-traditional theatre space on one of just four performance nights. Lightman’s book has been adapted into four “movements” of approximately eight or nine chapters each. And as you sit there watching this dream play unfold (three actors and one musician who accompanies the performance on piano), you play a role too. The performance is being shot by two videographers...who move in and out of the play and its audience like silent observers.
After, short films of each chapter and interlude are released as part of a 35-part web series.
