RETIREMENT

Marti Suber is the woman I studied Drama with my junior and senior years of high school.

Before that, I’d collected ideas about acting, writing, performing from observation...trial and error. But Mrs. Suber helped me find form in my disparate collection. She introduced me to the “study” of such things.

I had no idea there was a world of scholarship and understanding, of process...a pathway, if you will. Marti unlocked that door for me...gently, kindly, with a cheery smile.

I enjoy doing the same for teenagers. It is so satisfying to be part of that reveal for a kid. Seeing his/her look of relief, excitement, joy.

The thrill of finding “your thing”...knowing that a lifetime may be spent doing it, that’s the best moment of one’s youth.

I and thirty years-worth of former drama students plan to celebrate Marti’s career May 30 in Columbia.
