MYSTERY

“The congregation worshipping in St. Stephen’s Chapel erect this tablet to the memory of the Rev. Thomas Coachman Dupont who, for seven years, diligently and faithfully ministered to them the word and sacraments of eternal life.

“Unwavering in his adherence to principle and stern in his general deportment, he was yet kind and warm in his affections. His liberality to the poor was often exercised at the sacrifice of his own comfort, and the only self-denial of which he seemed incapable, was that of refusing to contribute to the wants of the needy.

“The widow and the orphan have been deprived of a tender and anxious friend, and his congregation mourn the loss of a faithful and devoted pastor.

“Of ardent temperament and untiring zeal, he tasked to the uttermost his physical and intellectual strength until a naturally strong mind sunk beneath the weight of his many and arduous labours; and a fearful, though irresponsible act, hurried him to an early grave.

“He was born on the 23rd of June 1811; was ordained deacon the 22d of November 1836; was admitted to the priesthood the 16th of May 1837; and died the 23rd of June 1848, aged 37 years.

“The ways of God are past finding out.”
