TEXTED

Teaching high school kids for four years, I learned a lot.

I think it best to keep talking to my teenage daughter...even when she eyerolls and sighs me off. She is in a coma. But she may wake up one day. And I’ve heard that interacting with such people may help snap the spell.

So this. A message texted to Gibson Grace White (age 13) as she sat in the airport yesterday, waiting for a flight to London with her grandparents:

The world is very big and we are very small. Ambitious travel reminds us of this fact...and forces us to wonder: why me? why now? Don’t forget to ask yourself those questions every day of your trip.

And her response:

Weird...

Then, back to me:

It’s one of the top reasons being alive beats being a zombie.

She:

Um, K.

I think I’m breaking through, don’t you?
