BRITCHES

There is something therapeutic about mending the two and a half inch gash in this pair of fading black pants.

I bought them at Sears. “Structure” brand, black 100% cotton dress pants. “Wrinkle-free!”

Got them to wear on my first day of teaching high school drama. Don’t remember what I paid for them. But I know me. Bet I paid less than $30.

(I was really good that day...stood on auditorium seats and bellowed at them all...platitudes about life and art. Scared the crap out of them, I think.)

These pants are five years old now...faded to a semi-glossy gray. They are frayed at the ankles, and both pockets have hard, washed gum deep inside.

But they still fit me perfectly. And it felt great putting on this old costume this morning. Reminded me to be ambitious today. Like five years ago when I first wore them.
