NOMADIC

My JOSEPH will be set among the wilderness-wandering Children of Israel.

The musical presents the biblical story of Joseph as a play-within-a-play...a performance presented to school children. In our production, the school children are young Jewish kids living as nomads. They've heard stories of their forefathers, but the older kids are going to bring those stories to life.

For design inspiration, I took scenographer Robin Byouk to Atlanta's Fox Theatre yesterday.

The Fox was built as a massive Shriner's temple in the late 1920's and soon after became a premier "picture palace" and concert hall. The building's exotic North African decor is awe-inspiring.

Most interesting to me, is the balcony's grand canopy...a faux tent-top, set off by sharp, spear-like framing. This is the setting for my JOSEPH. A wind-swept old provisions tent...inside, players unpacking their costumes and props from hidden baskets.
