ASKING HEAD

I’ve been making personalized “video asks” these past few weeks—two to three minute long videos of me directly addressing the camera, asking for contributions to my new feature film project at Kickstarter.com.

I’ve made and sent over 200 to date, have 100 more to do before the beginning of next week.

When I started, I thought, “Why not make these? I’m asking people to give me their hard-earned cash. It’s the least I can do.” Then, after I’d made several dozen, I realized that “facing” all of you was tough. I mean, every video requires me to picture you, remember you, imagine you…talk directly to you.

I started thinking more deeply about the film. As I ask for your support, I imagine you watching it. And that…that’s very powerful. It’s made me think about my audience as a collection of individuals rather than some amorphous blob…blithe faces seated in rows, staring straight ahead.

I’m not sure if all these videos are getting through…if they are working as a fundraising tactic or not. But I don’t care anymore. The process has yielded an invaluable result: I really do know my audience now. And this has made me a better filmmaker.
