BORED

It is puzzling to me why the old-school Academy Awards is so hell-bent on attracting younger viewers…new viewers, maintaining their sagging television ratings.

I mean, why keep something so old-fashioned…something so pale in comparison to it’s heyday…why do they keep such a thing going?

The Miss America pageant, Grammy awards, Emmys, Golden Globes…and other entertainment award shows have settled into profitable niches.

But not The Oscars. It still wants to be The Super Bowl.

In the Fifties, an annual, live-broadcast, movie awards show made sense. Americans saw and liked the same 30-40 movies each year. Film studios had to maintain the idea of Hollywood glamour to compete with the growing ubiquity of television. And the industry itself had a kind of homogeneity found rarely these days…except in so-called “high tech” businesses and corporate law firms.

Yet…I did watch the show last night…kinda bored, detached.

Was I eavesdropping?

Or gawking?

No...rubbernecking.
