IMPEACHED

In 1987, I served as president of the Irmo High student body.

I loved it. Mostly because I got to make the P.A. announcements every morning.

I’d crack wise when announcing wrestling practices, comment on daily lunch offerings in the cafeteria...once I asked an assistant principal if he would recite the lyrics to the Diff'rent Strokes theme song to promote school unity. He did!

But I lost my P.A. privileges after a disgruntled 10th grader brought an impeachment charge to the principal’s desk. One of my friends had teased him over the P.A. system one day. So he called for my ouster on account of my “abuse of power.”

The student council voted to keep me, but the principal banned me from the announcer’s booth as a sort of punishment.

At the hearing, I wore a U.S. Marine coat...evoking the image of Oliver North.
