INCUBATION

There is a useful period of incubation that I’ve recently discovered and applied to my writing endeavors.

Not to be confused with writer’s block or sheer laziness, it is a period of pre-writing thoughtfulness when what is to be written is worked through, mulled over...it’s when I find my story and solve problems.

Once written, there is an editing process where the writing is refined. But I think most of the major issues and problems with plot and character are best dealt with during my thinking period.

Working through the EINSTEIN’S DREAMS short film, I’m finding that my year-long pre-writing is paying off. Same goes for work on the 3:16 screenplay. I know these stories and characters now. Solutions come more thoroughly.

I’d hoped writing would be more properly workmanlike. Never realized so much of the work happens in my head without a key stroked.
