Can’t think of anything that haunts Americans like the Third Reich seems to haunt Germans. Not slavery or racism...our environmental and energy excesses...or even the abhorrent treatment of children in our factories a century ago.New German cinema tends to focus on the Nazis...or the future. I’ve just seen two contemporary German films that are ghost stories...haunted by Hitler.
THE HARMONISTS (1998) by Joseph Vilsmaier tracks like a Richard Attenborough epic as it tells us the true story of the 1920s vocal super-group, the Comedian Harmonists. These guys were The Beatles in Weimar Germany...until the Nazis came along and kicked out John and George.
NORTH FACE (2008) by Philipp Stolzl is a mountaineering adventure, also based on true events. It is the eve of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and the Reich pushes two pairs of German climbers to conquer the harrowing Alpine ridge, Eiger.
