HEROES

I showed JOSEPH CAMPBELL: THE HERO’S JOURNEY (2000) to my screenwriting students this morning.

I like Campbell’s ideas about the nature of myth (“Myths are not lies, they are metaphors.”) and his concept of “the hero’s journey” as put forth in the 1949 book, “The Hero With a Thousand Faces.”

As Campbell talked about the importance of “personal myths,” I found myself reflecting on those stories, archetypes, and heroes that have guided and inspired my life and work.

In addition to my own religious traditions (Christianity), I find myself compelled and inspired by other artists, mostly...writers, musicians, filmmakers, dramatists, photographers, and painters. Of course, when I was younger I was more into heroic athletes, politicians, even summer camp counselors...but not anymore.

I do consider Joseph Campbell a personal hero. He found a way to reconcile reason and faith—giving each its due, without losing either in the process.
