Eric is attending a lively, house-party/reception for Western North Carolina folk artists. It is a gathering of the hippie-town art elite…the kind of event he isn’t entirely comfortable with.
He is here with his girlfriend of four months…Randi. She is younger than Eric…has a knack for social combat. Randi should have been a lawyer.
Eric slouches away from the buzzing center of the party. He soon finds himself chatting with an older gentleman near the leaf-covered swimming pool.
Reg, a retired British television presenter, explains to Eric that he is planning a cross-country trip to collect footage for a late-career return to the small screen. His will meet and interview average Americans about their lives, then send the footage to an old friend at the BBC as a pilot.
When Eric reveals that he’s a still photographer, recently dabbling in video, Reg asks if he’d like to be his videographer.
