Suddenly, she is there. Slipped into his frame as if by accident.It is Susan. His college girlfriend, Susan. The girl Eric lost when she became pregnant their junior year and left town. Susan.
“Eric?”
She’s seen him.
“Wha..? I mean, yeah.”
“Hi.”
“What in the world? I…man, I mean…it’s been forever.”
“Yes.”
They stand there regarding each other for a long moment. And suddenly, Reg is there. At her side.
“I see you’ve met my wife,” he says cheerily.
Over drinks at a nearby pub, Reg and Susan inform Eric that he has been driven half-way across the country under false pretenses. There is no BBC pilot to be filmed. Instead, there is a teenager daughter who wants to meet her birth parents waiting for them in California.
After resisting at first, Eric is persuaded to continue with Reg and Susan…driving West.
What more does he have to lose?
