Eric and Reg stand a hundred yards in front of a tall, rappelling silo on the outskirts of Oklahoma City.
Their relationship, which had started to veer into father/son territory, is different now.
Everything has changed. He’s agreed to a long drive west with his ex-girlfriend and her (this fact still dumbfounds him) husband. He will meet an estranged teenage daughter in Santa Monica, California in just a few days.
Susan is expertly rappelling down the silo. She’d asked Reg to stop for a quick workout. A climb. This leaves Reg and Eric alone long enough to have this conversation…this chance to make peace.
Reg seems genuinely apologetic for misleading Eric, yet he presses Eric to embrace the trip for Susan’s sake.
“When the call came,” he starts, “She…look, she wouldn’t even have come this far if there hadn’t been the chance of you coming along, too.”
