“She could have called me.”

“She couldn’t call you.” Reg says.

“I would have…I…what was she afraid of?”

Reg thinks about this question for a long moment. “She couldn’t say it. She couldn’t speak it.”

“Say what? Speak what?”

“She couldn’t say your name.”

At this point, Susan is upon them…helmet in hand, harness still around her hips. She smiles at them both.

Reg wraps an arm around her shoulder and expresses his gratitude to Eric for joining them.

Amarillo. Mile after mile of driving with no end in sight.

Eric sits perched in the center of the rear seat like a little kid…except for when Susan trades out with him to sleep. Reg stays committed to the driver’s seat.

The longer they are moving, the more comfortable Eric and Susan become talking about the past they shared together. Eventually, one sees the shadow of a once thriving relationship emerge.
