
Late that afternoon, the three travelers check in at a chain hotel to settle in for the evening. Soon after, they find themselves drinking beer from cans and crunching deep fried peanuts outside a local barbecue joint.
Eric and Susan are bickering again…playfully, loudly, but with serious subtext. Reg says that they must resolve their petty dispute with a simple foot race.
“A race?"
“A dash,” Reg explains, “A one hundred yard dash!”
The bickering stops almost instantly, but Reg is determined.
“On your marks!”
Tipsy but focused, Susan and Eric fight to speed past each other along the side of the dusty Texas highway spur as the last light of day fades.
Amid the inevitable pushing and shoving, they are giggling like children.
As they near Albuquerque, Reg announces that they will drive an hour or so north…towards Santa Fe. An old friend from his television days, Milt Breedlove.
