Steve Mahone has been a friend and mentor for 18 years. He cast me in a production of Jean Anouilh’s play BECKET in Dallas...fall of 1992. Soon after, Steve designed lights for a play I directed and acted in, and helped me make my first film, NIGHT DIVINE (1995).
When I moved back to South Carolina, we stayed in touch. Every once in a while we’ll meet up in Dallas or collaborate on a project, but mostly we just trade e-mails, phone calls, news and stories of projects we are working on or dreaming about.
He was a big fan of my “action-adventure” high school theatre productions, and when I left teaching to pursue writing and play-making full time, he was just as enthusiastic.
We talked yesterday (he lives in Portland now)...details about directing an independent film. He was just as warm, funny, smart, and gracious as ever.
