When I am busy making things I truly care about, I am less likely to consume what others have made.
When I am writing, shooting, or posting a film, I don’t see many films…and those I do catch, I rarely finish. And I’m almost never amazed by them. (I’ve been hard-pressed to keep up with my Best Film This Week blog since I started working on so many film projects this past fall.)
When I am hand-making a play—acting or directing—I’m just not interested in seeing other theatre productions.
Interesting to note, this phenomenon occurs when I am cooking (I don’t eat out), exercising (little interest in spectator sports), and nesting (fixing up stuff at the house, I never feel like moving).
“In works of labour, or of skill, I would be busy too; for Satan finds some mischief still for idle hands to do.” - Isaac Watts
