PICTURE-PERFECT

Starting to put my finger on why I don’t like Broadway musicals.

Never been a fan of musical theatre…though I have acted in two musicals (“The Drunkard,” “Tomfoolery") and enjoyed the experience both times. I think it’s the aim of musical theatre that leaves me wanting.

I recently saw this solemn food video. I think that its intent is to elevate gastronomy…make it worshipful, perhaps. But what struck me most is the perfection it espouses.

Reminded me of the dozens of perfectionistic childrens’ party photos I’ve seen on Facebook…inspired, no doubt by the perfect images ironically put forth in so many domestic “simplicity” magazines.

And of course, the plethora of white shirt and denim (or khaki) clad family photos I’ve received over the years or seen on friends’ refrigerators. Oh, the bravado-ridden annual family updates that often caption these! The goal, again, is presenting perfection.

Musical theatre is, at its core, a presentation of perfect ideals through finely-tuned means.

I know not of perfection. In my living or my working. And I wince when I see other imperfect people striving for it.

Even when perfection is attained (which is almost never), it falls flat. It is, simply, that thing…that is.
