HIGH-FLIGHT

I didn’t know the children then. We came together all grown. But their faces look just the same now...even with whiskers and makeup. Hard twenties beaten into them. Their eyes have seen so many things since that lazy playground pose.

See them then, four brave astronauts hurtling through time and space. Blazing past at the speed of light! (Though in that capsule it must have felt like things were as still as sand.)

The captain, my captain. Eldest sister. Aliver than ever and glad for her lot. I adore her. Want to be her spacesuit and robot arm. Yes, she’s my favorite crew member. Undaunted, brave...even when brokenhearted. Stronger when she is terrified, I think.

I’d trust her with my life...though she’d be so much better served letting me slip back to the surly bonds of earth...put out her hand, and touch the face of God.
