The book was a non-fiction memoir about building a tower in the woods. Some city guy followed his gut and built a two-story retreat in the woods near a beach. The book follows his story, from planning to execution to living in his handmade New England vacation home. As the narrative unfolds, we learn about various towers throughout history and literature.
The author suggests that there is an innate desire within every man to build...up. To make something taller and greater than himself. A structure that can withstand the elements and survive. To live on after he is gone.
I think I gave a copy of this book to my dad. May have been my copy. Can’t find it around the house. Can’t find a used copy online, either.
(“Tower,” found in The Open Book’s architecture section, 2004.)
Still, it’s been on my mind lately...building up.
