A GRIEF PERFORMED

God forbid anything tragic befall me or mine, but if it does…if the “eyes of the world” turn their gaze to my heartbroken household and seek to share in our grief, to empathize with us, to perform grief publically on our behalf…I will send them home with a bloodied lip.

The shameful spectacle in Tucson last night…that orgy of grief performed for a nation, with it’s souvenir T-shirts, choreographed expressions, sports arena cheers…oh the cloying questions answered so gravely. That buffoonish politician claiming wizard prowess (“She opened her eyes for the first time!”). This bizarre American spectacle…unfolding like a scene in a Tom Wolfe novel

Holy God in heaven…please don’t strike us all down!

Most will say Grief TV began at Diana’s funeral. Perhaps it did. Still…it must stop. This is no way for humans to behave.

One cannot mourn abstractly. To do so makes a mockery of material mourners.
